First-of-its-kind SM Sensory Lab marks a major milestone in inclusive mall spaces for Filipinos on the autism spectrum
MANILA, Philippines— SM Supermalls continues to redefine what it means to be a true Mall for All as it marked National Autism Consciousness Week (NACW) with meaningful, action-driven initiatives that go beyond awareness and into real inclusion.
Through SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Supermalls, this year’s NACW celebration focused on acceptance, appreciation, and accessibility, ensuring that mall experiences are welcoming and supportive for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families.
“This year’s celebration of National Autism Consciousness Week is a significant step forward for SM Supermalls,” said Steven Tan, President of SM Supermalls.“By hosting Lights Up, Sounds Down screenings and opening the very first SM Sensory Lab, we reinforce our commitment to making sure every customer finds a space they can truly love at SM.”
SM Sensory Lab: Redefining Inclusive Mall Design
The highlight of this year’s celebration was the launch of the SM Sensory Lab at SM Mall of Asia, the first and only dedicated sensory-friendly space in a Philippine mall designed for children and adults with sensory processing challenges.
Developed in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA), and supported by the Autism Society Philippines, the SM Sensory Lab sets a new benchmark for inclusive public spaces.
“Opening the SM Sensory Lab was a natural next step in our ongoing pursuit of genuine inclusion,” Tan shared.“We worked closely with our partners to ensure every detail was thoughtfully designed for a space that has never been done before in a mall setting.”
Featuring soft lighting, calming seating, and sensory-friendly elements, the space offers a quiet refuge within the bustling mall environment. Designed to comfortably accommodate up to 10 individuals, it allows persons with sensory needs and their guardians to feel safe, supported, and at ease.
Access to the SM Sensory Lab is free of charge and made seamless through the SM Malls Online App, where customers simply scan a QR code to use the facility.
Lights Up, Sounds Down: Making Movie Moments Accessible
Another key initiative during NACW was Lights Up, Sounds Down (LUSD), sensory-friendly movie screenings designed to reduce common triggers found in traditional cinemas.
In partnership with SM Cinema, select theaters adjusted lighting levels and lowered sound volumes to create a comfortable, welcoming environment for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families.
“Something as simple as watching a movie can be overwhelming, not just for individuals with autism, but also for their loved ones,” Tan explained.“Through Lights Up, Sounds Down, families can finally enjoy a movie together in a setting that understands their needs.”
What started as a single-mall initiative has now grown into a nationwide effort. Today, LUSD has welcomed over 5,000 participants and their families, with screenings hosted across multiple SM Supermalls. This year, SM City BF Parañaque and SM City Butuan joined the expanding network of participating malls.
Inclusion Beyond One Week
SM’s commitment to inclusivity extends far beyond NACW. Through SM Cares, year-round initiatives continue to promote awareness, empathy, and acceptance across all SM Supermalls nationwide.
Mall frontliners including security personnel, operations teams, and tenants, receive regular training and refresher courses on how to support and assist customers on the autism spectrum. Information campaigns further help foster understanding and compassion among mall communities.
“Being an inclusive mall isn’t limited to a one-week observance,” Tan emphasized.“Our goal is to consistently empower our malls and communities to be accepting, appreciative, and accommodating regardless of a customer’s needs.”
