Our children are the most precious thing that we have. Even a person with a cold heart can’t fight against their charm. Of course, parents always try to do the best for their children. All of this makes it that much harder when we realize that a child might be suffering from a disease or condition which can potentially change its life for worse. With all these different problems which may happen to a child, one of the most realistic threats is low height or low growth. Although it may seem naive in comparison to some other conditions, low height can negatively impact child’s confidence and it can even lead to insecurity in later years.

First, we need to measure our child in order to see if the child has a problem with height. If the child is smaller than its peers, it is safe to say that the child has issue with its height. This can happen at any age but the causes may vary. When child is really small, the problem with height is usually caused by malnutrition. Most of the children who are below average don’t have any disturbances. In fact, low height is usually only genetic; their parents and grandparents are probably small in stature. Unfortunately, in some cases, there may be a pathological cause behind low height and low growth in general. This may be caused by bowel inflammation, sensitivity to gluten, thyroid hormone, different chromosome disorders and other issues. Some of these issues can be cured while the some are permanent conditions. For example, you can use hormonal supplements for thyroid. Besides this hormone, there are other drugs which can supplement lack of the other hormones such as oxytocin nasal spray or oxytocin sublingual drops.

Growth hormones improve speed at which the child is growing, they regulate fat imbalance existing in body, increase in body tissue density, increase of muscle mass in comparison to fat tissue. During the first year of this therapy, child can grow around one centimeter per month, during second year seven to eight centimeters and later, when the condition stabilizes, the child will grow normally for its age. It needs to be mentioned that the growth hormone does not affect child’s puberty. Even though child may be using these hormones, they will not influence the growth of sexual organs and secondary sexual characteristic. So, even if child takes above mentioned medicine, it will not impact any other aspect of child life.

As soon as parents notice that their child is lagging behind other children in terms of growth, they need to consult with pediatrician. Like any other medical condition or issue, you need to act promptly in order to prevent any long term damage to child’s body. During the treatment, pediatrician will measure the high of the child as well as six months after the first testing. After that, doctor will be able to conclude if the child is growing properly and if he or she needs additional growth hormone. Any potential issues with child should be discovered before it starts going to school.
