How to Clean Leather With Household Products By Carole Ellis, eHow Contributor

For visual learners, you may watch this video. You may use olive oil as substitute to leather wipes, cleaner, and conditioner.

What I used:
  • 4 small and clean rags
  • water
  • mild liquid hand soap
  • olive oil

  • My old, dusty, dirty leather bag before cleaning. Notice that the metal parts are very oily.

What I did:
1. I wiped the bag using dry rag to remove the dirt and dust.

2. I saturated a cleaning rag with water. I wrung out the rag so that it was just barely damp then I squirted about three drops of mild liquid hand soap onto the rag. I worked the rag so that the soap and water were dispersed throughout.
3. I wiped my leather bag with the damp rag with mild liquid hand soap using firm but calculated pressure. I didn't change my rag because my bag was not too dirty. Note: In case you are cleaning very dirty leather items, replace the rag if it gets too dirty so that you are not just smearing the dirt around.

4. I wiped down my leather bag with a rag that was barely damp to remove the soap residue that was left over after cleaning.
5.  I wiped my leather bag down with a clean, dry rag and made sure that it was completely dry.
6. I massaged a small amount of olive oil into the leather. I poured about six drops of olive oil on a clean, dry rag and worked it into the rag. I used firm but calculated pressure to work the oil into the leather. The leather should not be darker, shiny nor sticky. I used a dry cloth to buff off the excess oil.

My old bag looked so nice and clean!I'm so happy with the results!
