How to Teach Math on Kids with Autism and ADHD

This is my fourth year of homeschooling Bunso, my son diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Mathematics is one of his favorite subjects. When he was younger, it was easier for me to teach him since the concepts were still the basics. But as years pass, learning and teaching Mathematics become more challenging for both of us.

As a mom and teacher, I have to find ways to sustain my son's interest in Mathematics. It is a trial and error endeavor but through the years, these are the strategies that work for my son which I also apply when teaching him other subjects besides Math.

I teach him based on his learning style.

Bunso is a combination of kinesthetic, visual, auditory, and naturalistic learners. He gets bored when being taught through lectures. He doesn't want to memorize. He learns by doing. He is more adept at doing the process while I act as a facilitator. The concepts that he needs to learn are drawn up from the results of the activities that I ask him to do and I was just there to probe and help him delve deeper into his learning experience. He likes to be immersed in the activity, having his sensorial needs addressed. He likes to feel, touch, see, and hear in order to remember what he is learning.

I divide the tasks into chunks.

Children diagnosed with ADHD in particular get bored easily. Giving them tasks that are too lengthy or too traditional will not motivate them to learn. In order to achieve Bunso's full learning potential in a day without both of us struggling, I divide his daily tasks into chunks. What works for him is splitting his homeschooling schedule into three parts. We have three short sessions in a day: one in the morning, one at noon, and one in the afternoon. Through this, he doesn't get overwhelmed and tends to like learning more since he is not pressured to finish a lot of tasks at a particular time. I always anchor my teaching on this principle by the former Xavier School San Juan president, Fr. Johnny Go: "Minimize activities, maximize impact."

I include him in planning his learning schedule.

Getting his opinion on what he wants to learn first, how he wants to learn, and what he likes to learn besides his usual academic tasks gives him confidence and a feeling of accomplishment/satisfaction. It also teaches him "executive functional skills" or things that a person should do to live productively and orderly to achieve success and fulfillment throughout life.

I give him positive reinforcement.

Giving positive reinforcement means that it is not always giving rewards like stickers, stamps, or tokens. Bunso grows up that learning itself is a reward. Speaking in a positive way as he carries on his task works for him. This creates a learning environment without prejudice.

I consider his interests and give him various activities.

Bunso likes pen and paper activities, cooking, baking, art, and online games. These avenues give me the freedom as his homeschool teacher to integrate different subjects into the activities that he likes to do. It makes teaching and learning easier and more fruitful, indeed a fun learning experience too.

In line with online games. Bunso loves his "Game Time" as always. I let him play online educational games as a review of his previous lessons or mode of assessment. I don't force him to do it since he loves games using the laptop, tablet, or personal computer. It is a win-win endeavor for us! I get to assess his learning, he is able to learn, and both of us enjoy game-based learning!

Speaking of online games, I recently found a site that caters to Bunso's Math learning. Calculators.org has Free Online Games for Kids a.k.a. Student Game Arcade that has a wide array of Math games for children of all ages that even adults like me can enjoy.

Here are some of our favorites:

Feed Math

Feed Math is a fun and easy online game for kids and young at heart who loves food. This is how it works: You have to feed a boy sushi by adding two-numbered dishes. Then time is replenished after each round. After approximately a dozen rounds, the numbers start to get larger, making problems progressively challenging. It makes mental math more enjoyable. Its music and sound effects make it enticing to play.

Math for Kids

Math For Kids is a multiple choice game that promotes visual learning by showing animals that kids must count in order to perform different fundamental mathematical operations. Players have two minutes to play. It requires the presence of mind and speed in counting the items inside the box to know how many they are before performing a specific mathematical operation to get the correct answer. It has music and sound effects that make it more fun to play. If your kids are not yet ready for mental math, I highly recommend this game due to the presence of items to count.

Grocery Cashier

Grocery Cashier is a simple game that familiarizes students with addition and giving a "change" on cash purchases. The player rings up customers, collects their payment, and delivers the change under a time limit to he/she must enter the data quickly. A player may use gift certificates or cash to pay. If the gift certificate is larger than the order amount no change is given while change is given for cash payments above the order amount.

According to Lynch, Khouzam, Phillips, Uddin, and Menon (2014), when children with autism solve Math problems, there are certain parts of their brain that are activated. They have the capacity to solve different Math problems using different approaches compared to neurotypical children. They break down each problem into smaller problems to get the answer.

I noticed this in Bunso. Playing different Math games in Calculators.org is his tried and tested way of further developing his Math skills.

Practical and Doable Family Budgeting Tips

The key ingredients to a healthy financial situation are buying the right insurance for your family's needs, making sure that you have a will that protects your family, contributing to savings, and most of all, setting up a budget and sticking to it. Earning more money will only brighten your financial outlook and will be put to waste if you don't know how to spend and save your money wisely.

Establishing a family budget is challenging but doable

✅What you spend depends on many factors—your current expenses; savings reserved for other expenses such as car purchase, college education, health maintenance organization (HMO) health insurance premium; business/job stability; current income; and potential future earnings. You have to save 10 percent of your income as a good rule of thumb.

✅ To start your budgeting plan, you have to set both short-range and long-range goals in your budget. Setting goals gives you the motivation to control your spending. If you have to borrow money, it is best to borrow from a bank, multipurpose cooperative, or credit union where you will pay reasonable interest rates. Just in case that your family is in serious credit card debt, consult a credit counselor or financial advisor since your budget may not be enough to get you out of serious debt.

✅Consider establishing a plan or making some arrangements to save on a monthly basis if you currently lack a household budget or savings plan. If you consider yourself as a "spender" rather than a "saver", find a way to defeat your spending tendencies. It always pays off, particularly for retirement savings.

✅ Another simple way to budget if there is more than one worker in your household is to use one of your paychecks for each month to meet a big expense such as an installment payment for a car or home, and to use the other paycheck to cover the monthly expenses and bills.

✅ Don't be too hard on yourself. Avoid tracing every expenditure down to the last centavo because it wastes too much time and may cause family arguments. Instead, overlook the inevitable small items that you can't seem to track down. It's normal for most people to have a few pesos' worth of such unaccountable expenses every month.

✅ If your cash flow is unmanageable because several large household payments fall due within a short time, arrange a more convenient payment time for some of them. There is no harm in trying after all.

✅ Establish when your regular bills including credit card accounts or payday loans are due every month and work out the most convenient order in which to pay them over the course of the month. In doing so, you can avoid service charges and avoid being bombarded with a bunch of bills that have to be paid at the same time.

✅ To avoid having family expenditures occur simultaneously, stagger the medical and dental checkups of family members. Investing in a health maintenance organization (HMO) health insurance for each family member is advisable because it promotes peace of mind in case a family member gets sick. There are also prepaid health insurance available that suit your family's needs and budget. It always pays to be ready.

✅ When budgeting for clothes, plan to spend the most money on items that you'll wear frequently. An expensive pair of jeans is a more sensible buy rather than a costly evening gown that you are going to wear only once.

Don't punish yourself or your family. Avoid setting goals that will overly strain your earning and savings abilities. Keep in mind that budgeting is not a crash diet but a lifetime plan. You need to make some major adjustments in your attitude, spending habits, or future earning capacity if there is no way for you to maintain your saving goals. In some cases, it may pay to consult a professional financial advisor.

One of the key challenges Shine initially had was the fact that she was located in Canada making her 12 hours behind her market. However, she soon realized that this was actually her biggest strength because she had easy access to brands that most of her customers didn’t have access to. She could also lead the pack with new releases and sales that would never be available in the Philippines.

Over the years, Shine has had her fair share of life lessons and growing pains from managing TCM. She has realized that clients will always come and go, but they will always bring something special to the community. Crafting will stay relevant in our lives as long as we welcome and embrace it. It is that part of our soul that gives us balance, that allows us to say what’s in our hearts without using words.

For Shine, crafting has and will always be a big part of her life. From cross-stitching, sewing, card making, and her true love, scrapbooking. This has allowed her to keep intact her memories, fostering her love for paper, stickers, and ribbon, while earning money on the side.

She may be far from her home country but she doesn’t feel alone because she is constantly surrounded by people who are supportive of what she is doing and she has built a strong community of crafters, people who speak and understand her craft language.

From creating a small business to brand partnerships all over the world, from a small team to a growing team internationally, and from doing things by herself to being able to share with a community of crafters in an instant, Sunshine is definitely shining brightly in the world of crafting.

You Can Swap Your Old Glucometer for FREE and Spend Less on Test Strips and Lancets

Just recently, I asked my good blogger and nurse friend, Ning of The Super Momma, about where to get a reliable but affordable glucometer. Paps has been diagnosed with diabetes and due to his need to monitor his blood sugar immediately, we purchased a famous but expensive brand readily available in drugstores since my 17-year-old glucometer was already outdated and no available test strips or lancets in the market nowadays. The glucometer that we purchased was worth Php3,000 and 25 pieces of test strips alone would cost us Php725+ while the 25 lancets, Php500+. My uncle and aunt also sent us a reputable glucometer brand but still, the test strips and lancets for that were so expensive like the first one. Sabi ko sa sarili ko, mamumulubi kami nito since Paps would need to test and monitor his blood sugar daily so I had to look for a trusted but affordable brand then we would use those expensive brands for backup only.

Then Mommy Ning sent us a link to the one that she purchased for her husband on Shopee. It was a set actually, glucometer plus test strips and lancets already. She said that she chose this seller because it ships out items very quickly and they always have fresh stocks. Furthermore, the price of that set was less than a thousand, way much cheaper than the brand that Paps was using at that time. Most importantly, the matched test strips and lancets are so cheap. As I was about to order it, I browsed the photos first and saw this:

I immediately sent a message to the seller and asked for the promo details. Its representative replied immediately. How fast! I learned that if they accept an outdated, malfunctioning, busted, and still working glucometer regardless of the brand then they would replace it as long as the owner would purchase the test strips and lancets that match the glucometer that they would give. On that day, they confirmed the receipt of my outdated glucometer and told me that they would include the new glucometer as I checked out my order. I received my order two days after. It was so quick and easy!

Malaking tipid in the long run because I will purchase again for replenishment. The money that we will save from buying expensive test strips and lancets will be diverted to medication expenses.
